Qahwa
About This Spot
Stepping into Qahwa on North Main Street feels like slipping into a quietly tucked-away chapter of downtown Memphis, where time moves a little slower and the hum of conversation mingles softly with the rich aroma of freshly brewed coffee. This café inhabits a unique space—part old-world charm, part lived-in local nook—embracing an atmosphere that invites lingering over thoughtfully crafted drinks amid the echoes of its past. The presence of the vintage bank safe, now cleverly transformed into a seating nook, adds a touch of whimsy and history that quietly shapes the mood.
Here, the experience is calm and unhurried, a place where familiar faces exchange greetings and newcomers are gently folded into the rhythm of the day. The lighting dips low, creating an intimate space where soft chatter and the occasional clink of cups supply a comforting backdrop. It’s a spot where you’ll find people focused on their own moments—a paperback on the table, a quietly shared conversation, or a pause to savor something well made.
The drinks and flavors at Qahwa feel rooted in both tradition and a personal touch. Turkish coffee, prepared with care and patience, becomes a ritual rather than a rush. Smoothies and mochas arrive with a richness that speaks to balance over sweetness, while the lineup of pastries offers flaky, buttery complements that pair effortlessly with a cappuccino or a cold brew. The menu hints at an openness to playful experimentation too, with house specialties and familiar comforts alike finding their way to the counter.
Behind the counter, there’s a warmth and attentiveness that, while more welcoming to regulars, adds to the café’s grounded sense of community. It’s a place where the barista’s kindness threads through each order, making even a solo visit feel less solitary. And though there may be moments when the space feels like a quiet haven for those in the know, it generously invites those curious enough to explore its corners.
Qahwa offers more than just coffee and pastries—it creates a small pause from the outside world, a gentle reminder that some places are first and foremost about the comfort of human connection, subtle discovery, and savoring each sip as part of a shared local story.

One of the best mocha's I've had in my time on this earth. The owner is wonderful, and somehow remembers everyone.

3.5 stars Came for the Turkish coffee, but felt like they didn't want to make it, so we chose other things. Pastries were good. The place was quiet and a little dark (when we were there) several regulars popped in while we were there for conversation and items. We definitely felt like we were treated differently because we weren't regulars though.

What a quaint, neat place. Stopped in here for lunch while downtown at work and had a great experience. The place is nice and clean and the service is fast and friendly. I had a strawberry and banana along with a turkey and cheese panini sandwich. Everything was very tasty and I can’t wait to go back.

I stopped by this coffee shop in the downtown Memphis area on Sunday morning. It was a lazy morning, a few People gathered there chatting over the coffee. The coffee shop has a cool vibe, however, not the best one. I ordered a cheesy danish and a cold mocha. The danish was decent, but the coffee was too mediocre. It was too sweet. However, the barista was very caring and sweet.

Coffee and pastries in an old bank, they even left the safe and made it into a seating area! Funny and quirky owner ! Traditional Turkish coffee served here! (Takes 20 minutes) I got the Claridge house latte, it was delicious!

The best chai I’ve come across. On this visit I had the French Vanilla cupcake which was reminiscent of the flavor of cornbread. It paired really well with the Spiced chai. I like the ambiance as well- it’s a little gem.

This is a Downtown Gem! If you want a nice breakfast croissant stuffed with ham and cheddar, a bagel, hot tea, or their specialty a piping hot cup of coffee this is the place for you then! Customer service is amazing, and the price is just as amazing! You will not be dissatisfied!

Best Turkish Coffee of all time! Great shop, owner was very gracious explaining the art of making a true Turkish Coffee. He makes it on a hot plate in a bed of sand, the coffee to spice ratio is just right, the result is superb. A must try in Memphis.
